Sept. 8. Make a special effort today to break out of some self-enclosure—whether of selfishness, or timidity, or self-preoccupation. The quest for true maturity is entirely a matter of breaking out of self-enclosures. Expand your awareness to include the needs of other people. Then expand it further by sympathizing with those needs. Enlarge it still further, by helping them to fulfill their needs. Next, release whatever hold your own needs exert over you. Tell yourself, finally, “It is not I who am helping anyone: I only serve as a channel for God’s grace.” The feeling will come to you at last: “He alone is acting through me; He alone is the Doer.
