“ Sept. 23. All equality is a delusion, except in the oneness of God. Otherwise, life is like a ladder. The animals are helped up that ladder by association—usually as pets—with human beings. Less aware and less creative people are helped upward by serving in the homes of people more highly evolved. Originally, the caste system in India wasn’t hereditary, and wasn’t meant to suppress anybody, but was intended to indicate the ideal direction of human development: from body-bound to freedom from ego. “One moment in the company of a saint,” it is said, “will be your raft over the ocean of delusion.” The company of saints is vitally important, and most important of all is attunement with, and surrender to, one’s own guru.
