“ Nov. 1. Egotism is different from egoism. A friend of mine in college once asked me the difference, and without hesitation I replied, “Egotism is pride. Egoism is excessive consciousness of self.” I still consider this the best definition of the difference between these two words. Both words describe qualities that must be overcome, but of the two, egoism is much the subtler. The best way out of it is to give of oneself—to others; to what you believe in; to God.
